34th Annual Alcorn University Jazz Festival
The day-long festival begins at 9:00 am at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Mulberry Street. The event is free and open to the public and features performances by Arturo Sandoval and some of the most outstanding professional jazz musicians and university, college and secondary jazz ensembles from throughout the United States. Arturo Sandoval is one of world’s leading jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players as well as being a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, winner of ten Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award for composing the score of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” starring Andy Garcia. Highlights of the festival are the afternoon workshops and evening concerts by some of the world's greatest jazz artists. The workshops with featured artists take place at 4:00 pm. A Mississippi Jazz Educator's concert is at 7:00 pm and featured artists will be performing at 8:00 pm. The jazz festival is funded in part by the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Southern Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
