Katzenmeyer – Gage/Person Estate

IN SUPPORT OF THE PORT GIBSON HERITAGE TRUST

A limited number of antiques from the Gage/Person estate will be offered  in the now deconsecrated Temple Gemiluth Chessed which was built in 1891. 

The Gage and the Person families were prominent members of the business community engaged in commerce and banking in Port Gibson, the city that Grant found too beautiful to burn. The Gage House was built in the 1830s by the Gage family. One of the Gage daughters married a Person and it became the Gage/Person family home from circa 1840 until it’s donation to the Port Gibson Heritage Trust in 2017.

Highlights of the sale include an American Renaissance Carved Oak Sideboard that shares many similar aspects with an Alexander Roux sideboard in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a lovely McCraken bed, an awesome double door collapsible armoire known to have been in the home for over 100 years, a 7’ x 5’ portrait done in pastels or watercolors of James J. Person in an overwhelming frame and a 4’ x 3.5’ portrait of his wife in a handsome gold leaf frame. These are the highlights.

Smaller antiques include a number of occasional tables many with marble tops, parlor chairs, rockers, occasional chairs, Jenny Lynn style baby cradle, a variety of lovely settees, couches, marble top dressers and cabinets, a secretary style plantation desk, a six shelf corner shelf, marble top wash stands, a large selection of lamps both table top and standing, dining tables, some glassware including a large number of punch cups.
